Dear Parents and Guardians,
I want to take a moment to let you know how much I enjoy working with your children. It’s a joy to be part of their school day.
As the school nurse, my top priority is to help keep your child safe and healthy while they’re here at school. To do that, I rely on open communication with families. Please keep me informed of any changes in your child’s health – this includes new medical diagnoses, updates to medications, recent illnesses, or anything that may impact their well-being during the school day.
Maintaining a healthy school environment takes all of us working together. While we can’t prevent every illness from entering the building, we can take steps to reduce the spread of germs and keep our school community as healthy as possible.
According to Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines, students should stay home for at least 24 hours after having a fever (100.4 or higher), vomiting, or diarrhea. They must also be symptom-free without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Lastly, please be sure your emergency contact information is current. It’s essential that we can reach you – or another trusted adult – in case your child becomes ill or needs urgent care during the school day.

Physical Exams
The state mandates physical examinations for all students in Kindergarten or 1st grade depending when your child enters school for the first time. Please see your Pediatrician to schedule a physical. The form that needs to be completed can be printed from the BAEC Health Website under the tab "Health Forms". Please have forms completed by January 1.
Dental Exams
The state mandates dental examinations for all students in Kindergarten or 1st grade (depending when your child enters school for the first time) and 3rd Grade. The form that needs to be completed can be printed from the BAEC Health Website under the tab "Health Forms". Please have forms completed by January 1.

Should my child stay home?
Croup
Method of Spread: Direct contact with an infected person, or indirectly by contact with articles freshly soiled by discharge from nose and throat of the infected person.
Return to School: Exclude from school until symptoms are gone or physician authorizes return.
Fifth Disease
Method of Spread: Contact with respiratory secretions.
Return to School: Children with Fifth Disease do not need to be excluded from school since they are not contagious once the rash occurs.
Flu
Methods of Spread: Direct contact with infected person's nose and throat secretions.
Return to School: Exclude from school until symptoms are gone.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)
Method of Spread: Direct person to person contact with nose and throat secretions and feces of infected people.
Return to School: Exclude from school if ill.
Impetigo
Method of Spread: Direct contact with draining sores. Impetigo may itch and kids spread the infection by scratching it and then touching other parts of the body. Impetigo is contagious and can spread to anyone who comes into contact with infected skin or other items, such as clothing, towels, and bed linens, that have been touched by infected skin.
Return to School: Exclude from school until sores are no longer draining and the child is judged noninfectious by a nurse or the child's physician.
Lice FAQ's
Method of Spread: Head lice spread whenever there is direct contact of the head or hair with an infested person. Lice can also spread throught the sharing of personal articles such as hats, towels, brushes, hair ties, helmets, etc. There is also a possibility fo spreading head lice via pillow, headrest, or similar items. Head lice do not jump or fly and generally cannot survive longer than 24 hours off the host.
Return to School: Exclude from school until student has been adequately treated.
Mononucleosis
Methods of Spread: Direct contact with saliva of infected person.
Return to School: Student may return to school when well enough to resume normal activities.
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Method of Spread: Direct contact with eye and upper repoiratory tract discharges of infected persons, or indirectly by contact with contaminated articles of person infected, including eye makeup apllicators and mulitple dose eye medication droppers.
Return to School: Exclude from school until 24 hours after start of antibiotic.
Ringworm
Method of Spread: Direct contact with people or animals, indirectly by contact with articles and surfaces contaminated by infected persons or animals.
Return to School: Infected persons should be excluded from school until judged by nurse or physician to be noninfectious.
Scabies
Method of Spread: Direct skin to skin contact or from bedding freshly contaminated by infected persons.
Return to School: Exclude from school until student has been adequately treated.
Scarlet Fever
Method of Spread: Direct contact with infected person, rarely by casual contact through transfer by objects or hands.
Return to School: Student may return to school once treated with antibiotic for 24 hours.
Strep Throat
Method of Spread: Direct contact with infected person, rarely by casual contact through transfer by objects or hands.
Return to School: Student may return to school once treated with antibiotic for 24 hours.
